Custom web design
Custom web design, built from scratch
Most websites sold as custom are a theme with the colours changed. Here is what the word is supposed to mean, what you actually get for it, and how to tell the difference before you pay for one.
What custom actually means
A custom website is designed around one business. The page structure comes from what that business sells and what its customers arrive wanting to know. The layout follows the content, rather than the content being trimmed to fit a layout somebody else drew for a hypothetical company.
You will see the same thing called custom website design, custom web design, or bespoke design. The label does not matter; what matters is whether the structure was drawn for your business or borrowed from someone else's.
A template inverts that. It starts from a fixed arrangement — hero, three feature boxes, testimonial strip, footer — and asks your business to fit inside it. Sometimes that fits well enough. Often it means the thing that actually differentiates you gets compressed into a box that was designed for something else entirely.
A quick test. Look at a custom web design company's portfolio and ask whether three of the sites could swap content without anyone noticing the structure changed. If they could, you are looking at template work — which is a legitimate product, but it should not be sold or priced as custom web design.
Custom versus template, honestly
| Template | Custom | |
|---|---|---|
| Time to launch | Days | Weeks |
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
| Looks like competitors | Frequently | No |
| Fits unusual services | Poorly | Yes |
| Page speed | Carries unused theme code | Only what the site uses |
| Structure you can rank | Whatever the theme decided | Written around your terms |
| Sensible when | You need presence, fast | The site has to produce leads |
Neither column is the right answer for everyone. A template is a reasonable purchase for a business that needs to exist online this month. Custom web design earns its cost when the website is a real channel — when you are competing against businesses that look more established, or when what you sell does not fit a standard shape.
What our custom web design services include
- A design you approve before any code exists. You see the real thing, not a wireframe, and nothing gets built until you have signed off on it.
- Copywriting. We write the pages. Content is where most web projects stall, and handing you a blank document is how a four-week build becomes a four-month one.
- Mobile-first build. Designed for the phone first and tested on real devices, not scaled down from a desktop mockup at the end.
- Speed as a requirement. Only the code the site actually uses, images compressed properly, fonts self-hosted. No unused theme weight.
- SEO foundations. Page titles, headings, and structured data written around the terms you want to rank for, in place at launch rather than retrofitted.
- Full ownership. Domain, hosting, and files are yours. No licence, no lock-in, no hostage situation if you leave.
How the work runs
Five stages, and you know which one you are in at any point. Discovery — what you sell, who buys it, what they ask before they buy. Sitemap and content plan — which pages exist and what each has to accomplish. Design — a full visual design for approval. Build — the approved design constructed and tested on real devices. Launch — hosting configured, site live, everything handed over in your name.
Most single-site projects run two to four weeks from kickoff. Larger builds or ones with booking and ordering integrations take longer, and we give you a specific timeline once the scope is known rather than a number designed to win the job.
Who this is for
- Businesses whose current site was built on a page builder and has become slow or impossible to change
- Companies that look smaller online than they actually are, next to competitors who look bigger than they are
- Services that do not fit a standard template — anything with unusual scheduling, multiple locations, or an explanation the customer needs before they buy
- Anyone who has been quoted for custom web design and wants to know what they should be getting for it
Frequently asked questions
What is custom web design?
Custom web design means the layout, structure, and visual system are created for one business rather than adapted from an existing theme. A custom site is designed around what that business actually sells and what its customers arrive wanting to know. A template starts from a fixed arrangement and asks the business to fit into it.
Is custom web design worth it compared to a template?
It depends on what the site has to do. If you need presence and nothing more, a good template is a reasonable purchase. If the website is a real source of leads, if you are competing against businesses that look more established, or if your services do not fit a standard layout, custom pays for itself in the enquiries a generic site quietly loses.
How can I tell whether a web design company is really building custom?
Ask to see three sites they built that look meaningfully different from each other. A portfolio where every project shares the same structure with different photography is a template studio, which is fine at template prices. Also ask whether you get a design to approve before any code is written — custom work has that step, template work usually does not.
Does custom web design take longer than using a template?
Somewhat, but less than people expect. A focused custom site typically runs two to four weeks. The design and build are rarely the bottleneck — waiting on photography, written content, and account access is what stretches most projects, and that happens with templates too.
Do I own a custom website once it is built?
You should own all of it — the domain, the hosting account, and the files. That is our standard and it should be anyone's. A company that keeps your domain in its own account has built its retention on making departure painful rather than on the quality of the work.
Is a custom site better for SEO than a template?
Not automatically — a well-built template can outrank a poorly-built custom site. What custom allows is control: page structure written around the terms you actually want to rank for, no unused theme code slowing the page down, and structured data that matches your business rather than the theme author's assumptions.
